The steps of the PIRATES-COV study
We are looking for over 600 participants to take part in our study on probiotics and COVID-19 vaccination. Help us find out if taking probiotics at the time of vaccination can make the vaccine even more effective!
The study takes place over 6 months, in the comfort of your home.*
*Two in-person visits to the CHUS are also optional.
Step 1 – Data collection and consent
✓ Talk with a member of our team so they can verify your eligibility and answer any questions you may have
✓ Sign the consent form to participate in the study
✓ Complete questionnaires covering socio-demographics and immunizations, your dietary habits, and other relevant information
Step 2 - Getting Started
✓ Receive the PIRATES-COV self-sampling kit delivered to your home
✓ Complete a short training session on how to perform the required samples
✓ Complete an initial dried blood sample and return it by mail
✓ Take a stool sample (for gut microbiota analysis) and return it by mail
Step 3 – Product intake
✓ Complete two questionnaires regarding the side effects of the vaccination
✓ Take the product for 30 days
✓ Receive the booster dose of vaccine on day 15
✓ Collect a second dried blood sample and return it by mail
✓ Complete a logbook regarding the product intake
Step 4 - Follow-up
✓ Complete follow-up questionnaires each month for 6 months
✓ Collect three additional samples and return them by mail
✓ Complete a satisfaction questionnaire about your participation in the study
✓ Receive financial compensation for your participation
